23 अक्टूबर 2020 का दिन न्यूयॉर्क में बसे पंजाबियों और भारतीयों के लिए गौरवशाली रहा. इस दिन न्यूयॉर्क की एक गली का नाम वहां रह रहे पंजाबी समुदाय के सम्मान में ‘पंजाब एवेन्यू’ रखा गया. इससे न्यूयॉर्क में रह रहे पंजाबी समुदाय के लोगों को नयी पहचान भी मिली.
दरअसल, न्यूयॉर्क के Richmond Hill में सैंकड़ों पंजाबी रहते हैं. इस इलाके के डवलेपमेंट में उनका बहुत बड़ा योगदान है. इस समुदाय के सम्मान में ही यहां कि 101 Avenue को पंजाब एवेन्यू उपनाम दिया गया है.
यहां पर Lefferts Boulevard और 113 Street के बीच दो गुरुद्वारे भी मौजूद हैं. यही नहीं इलाके में बहुत से पंजाबी व्यापारियों की दुकानें भी हैं. इसके उद्घाटन समारोह में नगर परिषद के सदस्य David Weprin, Gurdwara Sikh Cultural Society के सदस्य और अन्य मशहूर हस्तियां शामिल हुए.
इस कार्यक्रम को कई देसी और विदेशी मीडिया ने भी कवर किया था. CBS New York के अनुसार, पंजाबी समुदाय को ये सम्मान दिलाने में David Weprin और कई दक्षिण एशियाई समुदायों का बहुत बड़ा योगदान है. वो पिछले 2 साल से इसके लिए प्रयास कर रहे थे. इसके लिए लगातार न्यूयॉर्क सिटी काउंसिल को प्रस्ताव भेजे गए थे.
