I have been house hunting in Bandra the last three months. My name ‘Rana’ does not come across as a muslim name for many owners. It is only when they read that my surname is ‘Shaikh,’ I get a call from my broker on behalf of the owner with the most obnoxious excuse https://t.co/vluxkiD52q

Muslims and Pets not allowed. This is one of the most posh addresses in Mumbai, Bandra. This is 20th century India. Remind me we are not a communal nation, tell me this is not apartheid ? pic.twitter.com/OFxGNDzTMq

Our housing society took a decision yesterday that our security guard who has been posting these hate msgs, inciting violence should not be sacked. How are we tolerating this hate in Maharashtra ? @AnilDeshmukhNCP @AslamShaikh_MLA @Navimumpolice pic.twitter.com/H2M8QBDLvi

This happens with many. Sometimes it is because of faith and sometimes it is caste.

No Court or Police Stations take this matter suo moto, because Judges, Bureaucrats and Police Officers are given Government accommodation.
If they have to find house on rent the problem might end.
We live in a fractured society..

Rana, I am trying to rent a home in Chennai. And one of the most common questions I am asked is if I am Muslim. If I had been, a good percentage of homes would have been unavailable for me. The brokers say, sorry madam, we don’t want to ask but owner told us to.

My ex husband is a Muslim. When we house-hunted 15 years ago (Chennai), homeowners accused me of committing sin and whoring myself. My ex would get so upset that he’d fight with some of them. He wants to move to smaller apartment now but he says nobody would rent to a Muslim.
